Replace Your Missing Tooth with a Permanent Bridge

Posted on 3/2/2026 by Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry
Dental bridgeLosing a tooth can feel like a big deal, and it is! Beyond the cosmetic impact, a missing tooth can affect your ability to chew properly, speak clearly, and even impact the alignment of your other teeth. Fortunately, there are ways to fill that gap and restore your smile. One popular and effective option is a permanent bridge.

What is a Permanent Bridge?

Think of a permanent bridge as a custom-made replacement tooth (or teeth) that is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap. These neighboring teeth, called abutment teeth, are prepared to receive crowns. These crowns act as anchors, holding the replacement tooth (called a pontic) securely in place. The entire structure – the crowns on the abutment teeth and the pontic – is all one solid piece, creating a "bridge" across the gap.

Why Choose a Permanent Bridge?

There are several advantages to choosing a permanent bridge to replace a missing tooth. They can:

•  Restore your smile: Bridges are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, giving you a seamless and confident smile.
•  Improve chewing and speaking: A missing tooth can make it difficult to properly chew food or pronounce certain words. A bridge restores these functions.
•  Maintain facial shape: Teeth provide support for your facial structures. A missing tooth can lead to a sunken appearance. A bridge helps maintain your natural facial contours.
•  Prevent shifting of other teeth: When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth can start to drift into the empty space. This can cause bite problems and increase the risk of decay. A bridge prevents this shifting.
•  Offer a fixed solution: Unlike removable dentures, a permanent bridge is cemented in place, offering stability and convenience.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Getting a permanent bridge typically involves two or more appointments.

1~ Preparation: At the first appointment, the abutment teeth are prepared. This involves reshaping them slightly to accommodate the crowns. Impressions are then taken of your teeth, which are used to create a custom-fitted bridge. A temporary bridge may be placed to protect the prepared teeth while the permanent bridge is being fabricated.
2~ Placement: At the second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is tried in to ensure a perfect fit and proper bite. If everything looks good, the bridge is permanently cemented into place.

Caring for Your Permanent Bridge

With proper oral care, a permanent bridge can last for many years. It's important to:

•  Brush and floss diligently: Pay special attention to cleaning around the bridge, especially where it meets the gum line.
•  Use a floss threader or interdental brush: These tools can help you clean under the pontic and around the abutment teeth.
•  Maintain regular dental checkups: Your dentist can monitor the health of your bridge and surrounding teeth and provide professional cleanings.

Permanent Bridges and Restoration Dentistry

Permanent bridges are a cornerstone of restoration dentistry, offering a reliable and aesthetically pleasing solution for replacing missing teeth. They can dramatically improve a person's quality of life by restoring function, confidence, and overall oral health. They are one option of tooth replacement, and your dentist can help you decide which is best for your situation.

Is a Permanent Bridge Right for You?

If you have a missing tooth, a permanent bridge could be an excellent option for restoring your smile and oral health. Talk to your dentist to determine if a bridge is the right solution for you. They can assess your individual needs and explain the benefits and limitations of this type of restoration.
